This post on mindfulness is based on NLP and mindfulness per the iNLP Center.
Mindfulness has implications on several levels.
There is the task level:
Whatever you are doing, be present and do it fully.~ a bunch of mindfulness gurus
If you practice this kind of mindfulness daily, you will be more productive, grounded and energetic than ever.
But is there more to mindfulness than being present with our tasks?
Yes and no.
No, meaning that who the hell knows what being present is or what a task is! How we define things will forever be a mystery between one person and the next.
From a pragmatic perspective, however, of course there is another level to mindfulness. There are multiple levels to everything. All you need to do is make up new ones that suit your purpose:) Which brings us to today’s challenge. We need a life purpose level of mindfulness.
Can you discover your purpose in life through mindfulness practice?
…..Yes! Why not?
The first step is to elevate our minds beyond the kind of mindfulness that is present with the external environment and focus on the internal environment. Not surprisingly, we treat the inner environment with the same level of mindfulness as the outer.
The label we give to this inner mindfulness is Identity.
Not identity like my neighbors use the concept. “Hey, Mike. How’s is hanging’? Gonna have a barbeque this weekend?”
No. Mindful identity goes well beyond your name and social standing. It’s about what you are. Not who. Not WHO. Aha! That’s it. Who you are is a name, a role, a social identity.
What you are is…….what?
As it turns out, you are Awareness. Oh, you could say that you are a human being, a configuration of elements, or your momma’s sweet child. You can make up whatever you want about yourself. But this is only ONE WAY to experience what you are and that is by becoming AWARE of it.
Regardless of what “it” is, the only way for you to be it is through the experience of it. The only way to experience anything is to pay attention to it – to become aware of it and hold that awareness. Awareness – you cannot be what you are without it.
Without awareness, in fact, you are quite literally nothing at all, unless you count a lifeless meatbag of bones as something, which you would get points for noting, but never appreciate those points out of your destiny to remain a lifeless meatbag of bones.
What is the Identity Level of Mindfulness?
The level upon which you begin to experience what you are, which is pure awareness. One way to find what you are is to meditate by using your favorite method. Get into a relaxed state and then become aware of what you are.
- You’re in a mindfully meditative state as a result of your favorite breathing meditation.
- Now, you begin to gently ask the question, “What am I?”
- Note your answers.
There’s no answer key to this test! I don’t know what you are. Keep asking the question until you know you’ve got the right answer. You’ll know when.
Whoa! Hold up!
You never got to the life purpose! What about that?
Here you go:
Oh – don’t go yet. Here’s the most important thing…
As you ask the question – over and over – what am I?” you will undoubtedly get varying answers. The key to progress is to accept them all! Accept ever answer that comes to you, as this is a part of what you are.
You’ll know when you’ve got the whole thing but here’s another clue.
Who and what you think yourself to be are only that – thoughts and words that form some sort of story. As soon as you start putting your experience into words, you’ve reduced it to something that cannot be experienced directly. You lose yourself in the process.
In other words, you are something you cannot put into words.
